Originally named "Demon", the common name used today originates from "Canfield Casino", a celebrated gaming house in Saratoga Springs, NY during the 1890's, owned by Richard A. Canfield.

Canfield solitaire

One deck of cards
Object: Play all cards to the foundation.

Tableau: 4 piles.
Rank is built down. Cards must alternate suit color.
Rank order wraps from king back to ace.
If a pile is empty, you can play any card.
The tableau can not play to empty tableau piles.
You can pick up and play the top card of a pile.
You can pick up and play an entire pile of cards.

Reserve: One pile. 13 cards.
You can pick up and play the top card.
If a tableau pile becomes empty, the top card from the reserve is automatically played to it.

Stock: Holds the 34 undealt cards.
Plays 3 cards face up to the waste.
When the stock is depleted, the unplayed cards are returned face down to be turned from the stock again.

Waste: Discard pile.
Only the stock can play to here.
You can pick up and play the top card.

Foundation: 4 piles.
One dealt card determines the base rank.
Play the base rank to empty piles.
Rank is built up. Cards must match the same suit.
Rank order wraps from king back to ace.
